About Basdai
Basdai Sookoor is a native of Trinidad, where she earned her nursing degree at San Fernando General Hospital School of Nursing. Following graduation in 1987, she migrated to the United States a year later. In the U.S. she began her career working for a small community hospital in Somerville, Mass. 1n 1990 she moved to Washington DC where she worked briefly at Georgetown University Hospital. She also worked as a homecare nurse providing care to those in the AIDS population as well as others afflicted with other diseases or severe illnesses, some in the poorest, drug infested areas of South East D.C. In 1991 she moved to the east coast of Florida where she lived and worked for the next six years. She worked for five years in the Mother/Baby Units of two HCA hospitals. In 1997 she moved to New York City where, due to a hiring freeze at the NYC hospitals, she entered the Managed Care arena. She was employed for five years by Empire Blue Cross Blue Shield as an onsite case manager. In 2003 she began working for a New York City union and is currently employed by the union as an offsite registered nurse consultant. She also is employed by Brandon Regional Hospital as a weekend case manager. Until her departure from New York, she also worked for a nursing agency in where she was assigned to North Shore Glen Cove Hospital for her entire tenure with the agency. She holds Registered Nurse licenses in both New York and Florida. Basdai’s book Into the Light Love Poems…A Healing Journey is her first work of soon to be published poetry, but for future fans of her work, not her last.
She resides in Valrico with her two sons Riadh and Jerome.
